Acoustics & Sound Masking

More protection, privacy, and productivity

Acoustic consulting and sound masking that keep conversations confidential and open offices workable.

RoofLevel 3Level 2Level 1

Sound-masking emitters above the open office, and acoustic treatment where conversations need privacy.

Security, privacy, and productivity matter more than ever — and sound plays a huge role in all three. Designing a building's acoustics means balancing noise levels, room acoustics, sound isolation, and vibration.

Whether you're a healthcare provider that must meet HIPAA speech-privacy criteria or a corporate headquarters that needs different levels of audibility across a variety of workspaces, our sound engineers design solutions that protect clients and patients while keeping employees productive throughout your building.

From evaluation to ongoing support

We design, oversee implementation, and support sound masking for retrofits of your current space, new build-outs, or evaluations of how well your existing system is actually performing.

What this covers

Sound Masking Systems

Open offices fail for one reason more than any other: everyone hears everything. Sound masking adds a precisely tuned, barely noticeable background sound that raises the ambient level just enough to make speech unintelligible a few desks away.

We design masking systems zone by zone, with private offices, open areas and corridors each set to their own level, then verify performance with measurements once the system is tuned.

  • Zoned masking design for open plan, offices, and corridors
  • Emitter layout, tuning, and measured verification
  • Integration with paging and background music

Speech Privacy & Compliance

For healthcare providers, speech privacy isn't a comfort feature — HIPAA expects oral privacy safeguards, and a waiting room that can hear the intake desk is a compliance problem. Law, finance, and HR spaces carry the same confidentiality stakes without the statute.

We assess speech privacy in the spaces where it matters, then combine masking, isolation, and layout recommendations to reach the privacy level each room actually requires.

  • HIPAA-driven speech privacy for healthcare spaces
  • Confidentiality for legal, financial, and HR areas
  • Privacy assessments with measured results

Noise & Vibration Control

Mechanical rooms, rooftop units, plumbing, and the office espresso machine all inject noise and vibration into spaces where people are trying to think.

We identify the sources and design the fixes — isolation, treatment, and placement — balancing noise levels, room acoustics, and vibration across the building.

  • Mechanical and equipment noise mitigation
  • Room acoustic treatment for echo and reverberation
  • Vibration isolation strategies

Sound Isolation

Some rooms need to keep sound in — boardrooms, studios, HR offices; others need to keep it out — focus rooms next to break areas. Isolation is about construction: walls, doors, penetrations, and the flanking paths everyone forgets.

We specify isolation targets room by room and work with your architect and GC to hit them without over-building walls that don't need it.

  • Room-by-room isolation targets (STC)
  • Boardroom, studio, and confidential-space isolation
  • Flanking-path and penetration detailing

Public Address, Paging & Music

Overhead audio does triple duty: paging people, notifying everyone in an emergency, and setting the tone with background music. One well-designed speaker system can do all three; three bolted-on systems do none of them well.

We design PA, paging, and music playback as one zoned system with clear intelligibility everywhere it matters.

  • Zoned paging and public address design
  • Background music systems
  • Intelligibility-first speaker layout

Frequently asked questions

What is sound masking?
Sound masking is an engineered background sound, similar to soft airflow, played through small emitters above the ceiling. It raises the background level just enough that conversations become hard to understand a few desks away, which improves privacy and concentration. Most people stop noticing it within days.
Is sound masking the same as acoustic panels?
No. Acoustic panels absorb echo inside a room. Sound isolation stops sound passing between rooms. Sound masking covers speech carrying across open space. Most offices need a mix of the three, and we design them together.
Does sound masking help with speech privacy in healthcare?
Yes. It is one of the most effective ways to reduce how far a conversation can be understood, which supports patient privacy in exam rooms, waiting areas and offices. It works best combined with room construction and finishes chosen for privacy.
Can sound masking be added to an existing office?
Yes. Emitters can go above an existing ceiling or be mounted under an open ceiling, zoned by area, and tuned to target levels once they're in so the sound is even across the space.
